Anyone that is interested in exhibition chickens should have and study the Standard of Perfection that is published by the American Poultry Association. The Standard provides written descriptions of the “perfect” representation of each breed and variety that is recognized by the APA. While there is no “perfect chicken”, breeders and exhibitors do their best to raise and show birds that come as close as possible to the standard based on their interpretation for their breed and variety. Terms such as “short”, “deep”, "or “moderately long” can all be subjective. Judges will consider these terms relative to each bird that is being judged. These terms also need to be applied so that they work together to make a bird that is balanced and proportional.
